Will Rice was a cowboy preacher, politician, rancher, land speculator, story teller, Texas State Senator, and 32nd Degree Mason and Grand Master of the Texas Lodge. The son of a Confederate captain, Will Rice was born in Missouri in 1857 or 1858, and moved with his family to Texas as a war refugee in the last years of the Civil War (when much of Missouri was turned into a depopulated and demilitarized zone by the Union Army).

Several score Will Rice descendents bushwhack each other from time to time at family reunions every summer or so -- telling tales, swapping stories, racing gocarts, and eating spaghetti. They seem to flourish in southern climes, especially Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, California, and South Carolina, but they can also be found in such out of the way places as Massachusetts, Lithuania, Japan, and Washington State.
